Average Cost of Fertility Treatment
Infertility affects roughly 10% of women in the U.S. alone, which means that for some, choosing fertility treatments is a necessary step in order to achieve a healthy pregnancy.
Having the family of your dreams shouldn’t be a stressful experience to overcome, but rather, it should be an opportunity to plan and enjoy the start of a new journey. Laurel Fertility Care wants to support you throughout the process, so to help give you an idea of what kind of payments you may be dealing with, here is a rundown of the average costs of fertility treatments that you can prepare for:
Prices of Fertility Treatment On a National Scale
According to The Bump, your personal information will also play a huge role in determining the types of treatment you will need. Considerations to age, physical condition, and fertility results must be analyzed before receiving medications or procedures. Once a specialist has reviewed your case, then a fertility plan can be put into action.
Something else to keep in mind is that all prices for individual treatments vary from state to state. For example, fertility treatments in California may be more expensive than those in a Michigan since the demand for fertility treatment is greater in that area. That being said, the prices below are based on a national average that patients can expect to see when visiting a fertility clinic and having a consultation.
Here are the fertility treatments and price ranges that may be presented to you:
- Ovulation Medications
Oral medications may be used to enhance the ovulation process in women, allowing her to accurately track cycles and increase the odds of fertility. Clomid or Femara are common prescriptions, ranging anywhere from $10 to $100 a month. In addition, these medications may be supported by an intrauterine insemination (IUI), along with an ultrasound to monitor activity. If all three are ordered, then ranges can vary between $500 and $1000, potentially more for monitored Clomid cycles.
- Hormone Treatments
To boost your fertility odds, hormones (gonadotropins) can be injected into the body to stimulate egg growth and release it into the Fallopian tubes. Then sex must take place within 36 hours in order to have a firm chance of conceiving. Typically, these hormone treatments cost anywhere from $1000 to $3500, with an average cost of $1600. However, many women experience 3 to 6 cycles before trying an in vitro fertilization (IVF) if attempts continue to fail.
- In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
IVFs tend to have a high success rate for those struggling with fertility, but it can also be highly expensive. Essentially, the treatment option requires several other procedures for it to be properly executed (ultrasounds, blood work, medications). With this in mind, total costs can fall between $10,000 and $12,000 for one cycle. Multiple cycles (if needed) will increase this total substantially.
- Egg Freezing
Some women choose to freeze their eggs until a later point in life, and this process requires several procedures in order to maintain the health and integrity of the frozen embryo. Overall, fees to carry out this practice can reach upwards of $8000. If you decide to implant a frozen egg with hopes to conceive, you may need similar procedures, resulting in a price range of $2,000 to $3,000 per attempt.
For couples who decide to use artificial insemination with an IUI, costs are between $300 and $1,000 for the procedure itself. The addition of a vial of sperm will tack on roughly $500 and the cost becomes greater including an IVF for a donor egg. By themselves, an IVF cycle with a donor egg, couples can expect to pay close to $30,000, which includes agency, donor, and legal fees.
