At Laurel Fertility Care, we are committed to evidence-based techniques for optimal fertility outcomes. A recent scientific breakthrough, however, presents a new proof of concept that could pave the way for future fertility solutions: scientists have successfully developed functional human eggs from skin cells.
The study’s achievements
Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) utilized a specialized technique called mitomeiosis to transform adult skin cells into oocytes (egg cells). The process involved:
- Removing the nucleus (genetic material) from a donor egg cell.
- Transplanting the nucleus of a human skin cell (containing all chromosomes) into the enucleated egg.
- Inducing the engineered egg to shed half its chromosomes for proper fertilization with sperm.
- Fertilizing these lab-made eggs with sperm via IVF in the lab and tracking embryo development.
Out of 82 engineered eggs, 9% developed into blastocysts (embryos at day 6, the typical stage for embryo transfer). However, all of these embryos exhibited chromosomal abnormalities, rendering them non-viable for healthy development at this stage.
“This research represents an important scientific milestone, but it’s crucial for patients to understand we’re looking at early-stage laboratory work, not a treatment option. Moving from ‘possible in the lab’ to ‘safe for patients’ is a journey that typically takes 10-15 years of rigorous testing. Our focus remains on helping patients build their families now with the gold-standard treatments we know work.” – Dr. Collin Smikle, Medical Director and Reproductive Endocrinologist at Laurel Fertility Care.
Why this Matters
This highly experimental work is currently a proof of concept, not a clinical tool. The presence of chromosomal abnormalities underscores that the method is not yet safe for use in fertility treatments. This research builds upon similar work with mice in 2024, and researchers estimate that perfecting this method to ensure safety, accuracy, and efficiency may require at least a decade of further development.
Despite these limitations, the implications are profound:
- Women of advanced maternal age, who often experience declining egg quality and quantity, could potentially benefit from lab-derived eggs.
- Individuals who have lost fertility due to chemotherapy or other medical treatments may find new avenues for genetic parenthood.
- Same-sex couples might one day be able to have biologically related children through this technology.
What this means for our patients
While this breakthrough is exciting, it remains a distant prospect for viable fertility options. Laurel Fertility Care continues to focus on established, safe, and evidence-based techniques. Our state-of-the-art lab offers various assisted reproductive technologies (ART), including:
- In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): Fertilizes eggs in a lab, with the resulting embryo transferred into the uterus.
- Intrauterine Insemination (IUI): Places prepared sperm directly into the uterus to enhance fertilization chances.
- Fertility Preservation (Egg & Sperm Freezing): Ideal for patients not yet ready to conceive, allowing them to preserve future possibilities.
- Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET): Transfers a previously frozen embryo into the uterus, offering greater flexibility and reduced costs.
- Donor Egg & Sperm: Provides options for same-sex couples, single parents, or those facing infertility to select from a known donor or trusted donor bank.
As the future of fertility science unfolds, Laurel Fertility Care is dedicated to safely guiding our patients through both current options and future possibilities. If you have questions about your fertility options today, please contact us!
