How does infertility affect Black families?
Fertility challenges are deeply personal, and for Black individuals and couples, they often intersect with long-standing disparities in health care. Research shows that about 30% of the cases of infertility in Black couples can be linked solely to the female, 30% solely to the male, 30% a combination of both partners, and remains unknown 10%
Studies find both Black men and women tend to wait longer to seek fertility care compared to white patients. Barriers such as implicit bias in medical care, lack of access, mistrust of the health system, and financial obstacles all play a role in these disparities.
Another study found Black men had a 54% rate of abnormal semen analysis results, including reduced sperm count and concentration, significantly higher than other groups. Meanwhile, Black women also have a greater lifetime incidence of conditions like fibroids, endometriosis, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which doubles Black women’s infertility when compared to white women. Even when Black women attain access treatments such as IVF, they have a higher risk of miscarriage compared to white women.
