Understanding fibroids: What you need to know during Fibroid Awareness Month

Around 70% percent of women will experience benign (non cancerous) growths, known as fibroids, in or around the uterus by the time they reach age 50. July is Fibroid Awareness Month, and at Laurel Fertility Care, we believe education is the first step towards empowerment to highlight how to care for this misunderstood condition.

What Are Uterine Fibroids?

Also called myomas or leiomyomas, fibroids are made of smooth muscle tissue which can develop as a single growth or clusters, and vary in size from less than a quarter of an inch to the size of a grapefruit. Though common, they often go undiagnosed because symptoms are sometimes attributed to other causes.

Fibroids can press against the bladder and rectum, causing frequent urination or constipation.  Other common symptoms include heavy or prolonged periods and pelvic pain or pressure that can complicate fertility.

How Do Fibroids Affect Fertility?

Fibroids can interfere with conception and complicate pregnancy in various ways. At times, they block the fallopian tubes, alter the shape of the uterus, or impact implantation. Although not all fibroids affect fertility, they can lead to serious health problems if left untreated. However, a fertility specialist can assess how fibroids may impact reproductive health.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Doctors can diagnose fibroids through pelvic exams, ultrasounds, or MRI scans. The earlier the diagnosis, the more options available for treatment, which will depend on your symptoms, fertility goals, and overall health. Here’s a few options:

  • Over-the-counter medications can relieve mild symptoms like pain and cramping.
  • A myomectomy surgery will remove fibroids while preserving the uterus.
  • Alternatively, uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a minimally invasive procedure that  blocks blood flow to fibroids, forcing them to shrink over time.
